Christmas Eve is such an exciting day! It’s full of unknowns. Did Santa get me what I wanted? Will the family members we dislike show up unannounced at our door? Did I buy enough beer?
In this spirit of expectation and excitement, we picked a brewery that we’ve barely heard of – let alone tried before.
North Brewing Company is part of Halifax’s rapidly growing selection of high quality craft breweries. Started on Agricola Street in Halifax, North Brewing has also just opened Battery Park, a craft beer store and brewpub in Dartmouth, with partners Ace Burger and Brooklyn Warehouse.
Something we really like about them is their goal of becoming a zero emissions craft brewery. They’ve already sourced electricity from Bullfrog Energy and are providing their spent grains to TapRoots Farms as animal feed. We’re excited to follow them as they move toward their exciting goal!
Enough back story. Let’s get to the beer!
This Winter Saison is a seasonal take on their standard Belgian saison-inspired ale. With the additions of ginger and black pepper, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this.
It pours a really nice cloudy, pale yellow. For some reason I find this beer looks great. All craft beer looks delicious to me, but something about this colour and cloudiness really appealed to me. The aroma has a lot going on, with the ginger playing its part. But I really got a lot of lemon coming through.
On first sip, it seemed like a fairly regular saison. With subtle citrus and fruit notes, it was really pleasant. But I was initially disappointed in so little ginger and pepper. Then I got about four sips into it and everything changed. At that point, there is a wonderful warmth that builds from those added spices. That warmth sits in the background throughout, without interfering with the other flavours.
We may not have known much about North Brewing Company before this, but we’ll certainly want to get to know more about them after trying their Winter Saison!
Overall, this is a really nice beer. It’s perfect for this time of year and was a great choice as a sipping beer on a lazy Christmas Eve.
