Craft Beer Advent Calendar: December 13th

Muskoka Brewery – Winter Beard Double Chocolate Cranberry Stout

  • Bracebridge, Ontario
  • 8% ABV
  • Style: Stout
  • Available: The Brewery, LCBO (Various other provinces too!)

There are those rare beers than can actually evoke a feeling or memory. And not necessarily a memory related to beer.

Winter Beard Double Chocolate Cranberry Stout from Muskoka Brewery is one of those beers. First sip transported me back to my family’s farm, sitting inside on a cold Christmas night. The smell of dozens of baked goods hanging in the air and a mug of hot chocolate in my hands.

  • First piece of advice: Serve this beer at the recommended 9 or 10 degrees Celsius.
  • Second piece of advice: Find a very comfortable chair and a good book.

The colour and aroma are both great. The body is a wonderful medium, smoothness. But the star of this beer is the flavour.

Winter Beard is rich and chocolatey, and somehow lower in sweetness. Maybe it is the tartness of the cranberries, but this beer isn’t the overpoweringly sweet experience I had predicted. There is even a really subtle bitterness that takes the edge off the sweetness that is there.

I actually paired this beer with a home-made brownie. Sometimes I have moments of brilliance (it was actually Jenn’s idea…)

What a good beer! The enjoyable name and packaging design are added bonuses to this must-have seasonal. And the best part? Muskoka sells outside Ontario, so there will be people across the country who get to enjoy this beer crafted in beautiful Bracebridge, Ontario!
