Have you ever tasted history? Well, now you can!
Black Creek Historic Brewery, which is known for brewing up beers with a back-story, has stayed true to their identity with this relatively new offering.
The recipe for Benson’t Strong Ale was found in a collection of notes and documents in the Archives of Ontario. It dates back to the 1830s, and was penned by Thomas Benson, who is best known as the first mayor of Peterborough, Ontario.
This is certainly an interesting beer. And it’s quite different from most other beers you’ll find on the shelves today.
It pours with an amber/copper colour, with very little head. There are interesting flavours to experience. The note of licorice is certainly a unique aspect of this beer.
Benson’s Strong Ale is also quite sweet and smooth. There is quite a nice spiciness that comes through at the end and lingers.
This is a beer worth experiencing. It’s really interesting to get the opportunity to taste an 1830s home brew!
